Web what? What in the world is web hosting?

It's where you put your web home

Don't let it intimidate you. The internet is an incredible place, mind boggling in its immensity, but so simple once you understand it, soft of . . . It can be complicated, but we're here to do that part for you.

Simply put, web hosting is where you can park your web site. A lot of folks think you have to have a $15,000 web server and IT staff to be "on the web". Absolutely not! That's where we come in. Web hosting means we maintain the server, do all the updates, stay up nights when it's sick, comfort it when it's scared, and yes talk to it (well, yell at it). Web hosting means we lease you some "web space" on our servers and then we tell everyone where to find you. So, you don't have to worry about servers, IT staff, security breaches, power outages, or giving up that corner office to the webmaster. You put your company "on-line" with us and relax. Generally for about $100 or less a year, you can get your own domain (www.you.com) and get mail at you own domain, post information about your company or organization, and generally get BIG TIME!

How's it work?

A quick lesson in the "ways of the internet world". The internet is a huge gathering of "web servers" all connected together through a networking protocol called TCP/IP. TCP/IP is an ingenious method of assigning a unique number to each server. Since us humans don't really want to remember a bunch of numbers, the web uses "Name Servers" or "DNS" (domain name servers) to do that. So, a surfer types in www.yourcoolsite.com in his browser. It sends the name off to a web server, that in turn sends the request to the correct TCP/IP address for yourcoolsite.com. Once it arrives, supersurfer's request is made to our server, that then spits back the requested page and it pops up on supersurfer's 21", LCD flatscreen monitor.

All you have to do is get yourcoolsite registered (of course we can handle that for you), put together your cool site, and host it on our server. Often times, you can do your own site in any number of programs out there, like Front Page, MS Publisher, or just convert some Word documents and you're off and running. Of course, if you want something fancier, we can help you with that too. Imagine, the vastness of the web for $100 a year. You spend more than that on business cards!
